What is the ‘reverb’ effect on guitar amps?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009

i was at guitar center today and was trying out a guitar and amp. One of the guys mentioned how the amp had reverb on it, but i have no clue what it is or what it does. thanks

It gives the effect that you are playing in a concert hall. The sound billows and sounds like you are playing in a large enclosed room (concert hall) or you could even say a tunnel. A lot of sloppy guitarists love the effect because it is pretty useful in covering up some minor flaws made in soloing.

What does it mean to run an electric guitar amp through stereo?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009

I play through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and have a full pedal board setup. I run my timed effects(delay, tremelo) through the preamp and the overdrives through the front. What does it mean to run an amp through stereo? Does it change the tone of the guitar/amp?

You can only run an in "in" stereo (not through) if the amp is designed to do so. That would mean two power amps and at least 2 speakers.

Your Fender amp is not stereo, so you can’t run a stereo rig with it alone.

Now, if you had a second amp you could possibly have a stereo rig. The one additional component you would need is some type of delay, chorus, or other time-based effect that has a mono-input/stereo-out arrangement.

The advantages of playing a stereo guitar rig are:
– The sound is spread out more
– With the right effect(s), it can mimic 2 guitars playing together
– Gives the option of panning effects

The disadvantages:
– The sound is more spread out (this isn’t always a good thing, especially in very heavy music)
– More gear to haul around
– Increased complexity in the setup

There are guitar rigs that are one-box stereo solutions. Most digital modeling amps (once you get past the toy ones) offer stereo. The Line 6 Vetta II I used is stereo. On small stages, I’ll run it into a 2×12 cabinet in stereo. On big stages, I’ll bring out two separate 2×12 or 4×12 cabinets and put them on each side of the stage. With that setup, I can give the audience whiplash if I put a ping-pong delay on!

How much would a cheap electric guitar and amp cost?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009

Just any regular Electric and amp,
What is the min/max you know of???

Minimum would be either walmart or a pawn shop. Probably less than $100. But you get what you pay for.
Max? There is almost no limit on how much you could pay for an outstanding rig. But if you want good sound on a good axe, you can find plenty between $800 and $2,000.
If you’re just starting, keep it cheap. Once you really get into it, you’ll know when it’s time to move up to better gear.

i need help deciding wether or not to buy an acoustic guitar and if so what kind? read details?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009

i’m 13 and i have never played acoustic guitar in my life. I want to be able to play at least one instrument and the acoustic guitar just screams to me for some reason. I want to know your opinions if i should buy one. if you think i should buy one do you have any suggestions on what to get. remember im 13 so i don’t have a job. Christmas is coming up soon so please help.

Most guitar makers offer a good "starter pak" like Fender or Epiphone or Ibanez. They come with a good quality acoustic guitar, a gig bag, a strap, and some other accessories for about $100. DO NOT BUY a guitar from Walmart or Target or any other big box stores because they are essentially toys for kids and not very good quality guitars. Buy from a local music store who can help you with the purchase. It is a very good idea to also take lessons to get you started on the right track. Good luck and have fun!

what are some good slap bass bass guitars?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009

Currently i have a shitty squier p-bass and i’m looking to upgrade. I play alot of slap bass and i’m wondering if there is anything other than Ernie Ball Music Man basses that sound good for slap bass. Thanks!

Have you tried the Sterling? The neck is a lot thinner. I’m not exactly sure what the pickup selector does and how it affects sound, but that has been discussed a few times and can be answered with a search.

The Stingray was noted to me alright for slap too. However the Stingray had good sound but getting around the fretboard takes a bit of effort and to set the sound up from slappy to low and punchy takes a bit of time.

What is the best brand of acoustic guitar and why?

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2009

I’m looking into buying an acoustic guitar. Although I’ve played 8 years I’ve only ever owned Yamaha’s. I really want to get a nice, durable acoustic guitar. Which brands and styles do you recommend and why? Also, how much would I expect to pay for the acoustic you suggest?

there are MANY good brands of acoustics

it depends on your "price range"

unless you have the time and money to check out the MANY small guitar companies, (and there are a LOT of good ones)
I feel that Taylor and Martin make the best American guitars,
between $1500 and $5000

they best ting to do, is to find a local music store, that carries many acoustics, and try them your self?

good luck

Full Story: http://www.davecarrollmusic.com/story/united-breaks-guitars – In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didnt deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing to compensate me for my loss. So I promised the last person to finally say no to compensation (Ms. Irlweg) that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world. United: Song 1 is the first of those songs. United: Song 2 has been written and video production is underway. United: Song 3 is coming. I promise. Follow me at http://twitter.com/DaveCarroll .
