Trying out the Monarch from Peerless Guitars

Trying out a very nice new guitar,
playing just anything that comes to mind
(with bits of acoustic bass guitar backing thrown in for good measure).
The recording was done straight to mixing desk (no amp), with only very light reverb.

Home Recording Studio Equipment?

Posted by admin on May 21st, 2010

Firstly. I am hoping to buy a new macbook pro. Any feedback on these in terms of recording? Also, if i decided to go with a top of the range Dell laptop for example instead, what kinda of recording software would be up to the standards of garageband? Any suggestions for a beginners mic for recording? And what other equipment is essential? :)

Thanks!!

Regardless of the laptop you buy, i would go with a solid external soundcard that can record at 24-bit/192kHz….that assures maximum studio quality… any built-in sound card to any laptop or desktop motherboard is by definition inferior to any decent PCI/e or External Sound Card… A good example would be the E-MU 0202 USB: http://www.frys.com/product/5097105?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

A mixer might be of use, although you could just do it on the computer to save some money, but a mixer is nice for live tweaks.

As for the mic, the NADY RSM-5
Studio Ribbon Microphone, http://www.frys.com/product/5457839?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG should last you all the way through advanced recording… its a great mic and its only $80

As for software, I havent done much recording lately but back in the day my favorites were Fruity Loops and Sonic Foundry Acid… the current version of these programs (now called FL Studio and Sony ACID) can be found at http://www.flstudio.com and http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/acidfamily.asp respectively … Fruity Loops is great for creating loops and beats, although ive created entire songs on it, ACID is absolutely awesome for recording and has a very slick multichannel timeline interface with great editing/looping features.

Where can I buy cool looking guitars online?

Some of the best built, coolest looking and sounding guitars I’ve seen. I have a Parker and it is an incredible guitar (the Fishmann piezos are great). Oh, I got it new on Ebay for about half what they retail for in the music stores (if you can even find one in a music store near you). I agree that you don’t want to get a cheap guitar on Ebay, but if you’re careful and know what you’re looking for, you can get some incredible deals. And the chain stores like Guitar Center only sell the big brands like Ibanez, Dean, Epiphone, Yamaha, Takamine, Fender, Gibson, and Schecter. Heaven forbid you want something a bit different than what everyone else plays.

how do guitar amps gain the amount of treble they put off?

Posted by admin on May 21st, 2010

i dont understand how a guitar amd can put off high amounts of treble when the speakers inside them do not contain a tweeter. sorry if i sound like a jackass, ive played for years but ive always been curious.

The only people who ever really use the word "tweeter" are car-audio people, and they usually don’t know anything about hi-quality audio replication. (They’re more concerned with wattage and volume than clarity)

The speakers in guitar cabinets are specially designed for guitars. Celestion is the big name in guitar speakers. Head over to their site and you can see response curves and all sorts of great stuff about their speakers:

But to answer your question: they are simply designed that way. They are special speakers designed to reproduce the frequencies that guitars and amps can generate, a part of that is high frequencies.

What is the normal setting for guitar amps?

Posted by admin on May 18th, 2010

I got a guitar amp and I was wondering, what is the normal setting for it? My amp is a Fender Frontman.

I will echo one point everyone is making, which is that it IS largely a matter of opinion. However, there are some other key points to consider.

First, the fender frontman is a very nice little amp and as a fender it is definitely going to give you some nice clean tones (as one other person pointed out) that are very useful in certain styles of music such as jazz and blues (think about some of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s music and you’ll know what I’m talking about, though he also made very good use of some dirty tones as well).

Which leads me to my next point, style of music is also going to be a factor in how you set up your amp. If you are going for that classic rock sound, then one nice thing you can do with fender amps is to lower the bass a bit and crank the mid and the treble and get some really nice crunchy tones.

One more thing to think about is the type of guitar you are using (and even the pick you are using to play it with) can affect how you’ll want to adjust the settings on your amp.

These are all basically ideas on what will play a role on how you’ll want to set your controls. My biggest suggestion for you, however, is not to settle for what sounds OK, play with the controls until you get the tone that you LOVE out of this amp. What I generally do is to take a new amp and put all the controls in the 12 o’clock position and adjust from there and play with it until I get something that I personally feel is a great sound. There’s a good chance that you’ll find what someone else tells you is a good sound is not necessarily the sound you’ll fall in love with from your amplifier. This is one way to define what YOU sound like.
