Get some new acoustic strings but there is no way you should pay $40. You can get a pack for around $6 and even cheaper online if you buy in bulk. Make sure you know how to string them right.
References :
New strings are the best way to get a guitar to sound better. You don't need to pay $40 for a set. There are several good brands which cost about half that for a set (D'Addario, Elixir, Martin). Start with light guage strings. Mediums sound better on some guitars, but but some guitars can't handle the tension. Lights will be easier on your fiingers, too.
Electric guitar strings are way too light.
You will be amazed at your new sound when you get proper acoustic strings.

It takes a day or so for the strings to stretch out and reach an equilibrium, so you may have to tune up frequently at first.
References :
Hmph... this is sorta like whether the expensive bottled water will taste better than the ones that 'merely come from France.' People will swear they can tell the difference in the taste and don't bat an eyelid when it's revealed they all came from a faucet.
The quality of your instrument and playing are also factors. I would say instead of spending $40 on strings, get 'good' strings recommended by your guitar store (D'Addario is a good cheap brand) and invest in improving your technique.

At the end of the day, a great guitar with lousy strings will ALWAYS sound better than a crappo instrument with expensive strings. And, of course, the equalizer is if the performer is faking it or if they really have the chops.
References :
try ebay, people there sell bulk packs of any type of strings, just make sure they are bronze phosphor. and get the bulk pack. there is nothing more convenient than having 3 full sets of strings put aside, it saves so much running around to guitar shops.
bronze phosphor cost a lot more than normal strings, but no strings are worth $40 for a single set.
