Bass guitars?
bass guitars September 25th, 2009ok I’ll make this as simple as possible:
-i have taken 7 yrs of professional piano lessons
-i took classical guitar lessons for about 8 months
-and i want to form a band
-so i need to learn how to play bass guitar…
=)
now…my questions are:
-is bass guitar easy? (considering how long ive played piano and guitar – and not to brag or anything but i play rly well – musics my life and i have talent in it so….. lol
)
-how much does bass guitar cost? i dont want a really cheap, bad guitar, or a rly expensive one (the most like $600 or $700, nothing more), i just want a good bass guitar that will last for a while and/or recommended
-and does it come with the amp and everything or do u buy separately?
thanks ![]()
It should be pretty easy for you, and you already know theory, so your set in that department.
Also, your fingers should be pretty fast, seeing as you used to play classical guitar.
Get a cheap Fender or a good Ibanez, they’ll be the best for the money ($300-$600). As for amps, ampeg, peavey, marshall, there are lots of good amps. a pretty good one will cost you about $500, and you have to buy decent ones seperatley.

Go to a place where there are professionals selling the guitars.. They know alot about them..
Usually you buy bass guitars without the amp.. The ones with the amp are a beginner pack i guess. And the amps are not that good.
If you want good quality, get them separately.
Sorry I cant help with bass guitars. I dont play bass yet.

if you have that much experience with playing piano… any instrument should be a breeze for you… as long as you can get down strumming, plucking, or what ever else.. kind of techniques down… all the bass guitar is is the top four strings of the guitar…. i had only been into music and playing guitar for like not even a month and i was able to pick up and play the upright bass…. pretty much right off the bat.. as for types of basses… fender has a good line of bass guitars.. i would look at them and see if you like any of those… good luck and have fun!

Hey. I’m a guitarist too. Yes your experience in Classical guitaring and piano will definitely contribute. Firstly, no instrument is easy to play. The bass will be just about as hard as your guitar or piano. I think you’ve chosen the right instument after guitar and piano! Now the next bit is the instrument itself. Try browsing http://www.amazon.com for the bass that fits into your budget. Also, refer http://www.ultimate-guitar.com and check out the guitar/bass reveiws. Usually, if you go for beginner or starter packs the bass is accompanied with an amp (around 10 watts) but you can always check!
enjoy! tc

Buy separates def. 30 watt amp will cost you $500 new. Consider buying second hand. Visit your local music shops and try out basses and amps. Also they do sell used gear usually.
Why not stick to keyboard? Get a synth and you are up and running (just a suggestion).
ps I was a guitar player who switched to bass and found it a piece of cake.

ok, I am an expert.
Your bass?
Fender make a Pricision bass that has been the model for most basses since the 50"s. There Jazz Bass may be more cool.
Its smaller, sexier and more tonal range then the P-bass.
The P-bass is a standard, all round, work horse for a band.
Go to http://www.musiciansfriend.com and type in Fender Bass Guitar. You will have plenty to choose from to look at.
If you type in just bass guitar, you have HUNDREDS to look at.
The "Fender Highway One" is american made and near your price range. The Mexican made ‘57 Classic is a great buy.
AND A GREAT BASS.
Nearly every bass on earth is a copy of a FENDER.
Bass amp?
Go to e-bay (for your bass and guitar)
100 watts minimum. If you want to be heard.
You will need a heavy 12" speaker but a 15" woofer would be much, much better.
That would be good to get you started. Just type in "Bass Combo Amp" and poof, hundreds to look at.
With your back ground, bass will be a breeze. It has a different groove than a guitar and the phrazing is different but you will pick up on that fast.
To start bass, just do the ROOT-5th thing and then go to ROOT-Octave-4th-5th.
That will put you on your way.
There are hundreds of very good bass companies out there. Telling you which one to buy, that would be perfect for you is impossible.
A fender precision bass has been the pick of the pro’s since it was invented.

Bass is easier than guitar, once you learn guitar. Difference is you need to have more finger strength on your neck. This may actually be more challenging.
Just like with any instrument, the best choice is the one that produces the best sound. Look for a sturdy neck, good pick-ups. Also be sure that the strings ring clear without vibrating against parts of the neck or bridge.
Keep in mind that most basic guitar amps just don’t have adequate power or range to produce good quality bass.
Big thing about it is you really want to feel it.

A Mexican Fender P Bass will get you 90% there.
A Squier P Bass also. Stay away from "The Affinity Series"
