I wanna start playing guitar should i buy an acoustic first or an electric?

Posted by admin on May 30th, 2010

Id rather play an electric guitar but some one told me i should learn with an acoustic guitar first. And can i get something decent for around a 100 bucks

This is a highly debated subject. People give a few different reasons to go acoustic so lets break those down.

1) Cost, you don’t have to buy an amp with an acoustic. Yes, this is true, but it is also true that for what you will pay for a decent playing solid top acoustic you could have gotten an electric guitar and amp. Someone mentioned amps not coming with effects, but almost all beginners amps will be solid state with built in effects. The Line 6 is a perfect example.

2) Acoustic makes your hands stronger. Again, true, but do your hands need to be strong enough to play acoustic if you only want to play electric? No.

3) Acoustic allows you to hear your mistakes better in the beginning. No one here mentioned this and to me it is the only valid point that can be made for starting on acoustic. Since the acoustic has a more pure sound you can more easily tell if you are doing something wrong usually, but honestly this is no deal breaker to me.

Any guitar teacher will tell you that about 1 in 10 of the people that start learning guitar will actually follow through with it. The other 9 will quit. So the biggest obstacle in learning guitar is just keeping your interest so you don’t give up. If you are into AC/DC for instance you won’t be happy learning on an acoustic and will be more likely to quit. If you are into Taylor Swift type stuff you’ll love acoustic. Also understand that because an acoustic will generally have higher action and thicker strings, it will be harder on your fingers to play it. When you start talking about acoustics under $300 then you have an even harder guitar to play. I have picked up many $200 electrics that played very good. I have never picked up a $200 acoustic that played well. So bottom line, get the type of guitar that your are most interested in, that’s all that matters.

What is a good acoustic guitar to buy?

Posted by admin on May 28th, 2010

I want to buy an acoustic guitar. I have no knowledge whatsoever of guitars, but what can i get in the 300 euro (400 dollar) price range?

There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all guitar, so the best thing you could do is go to a guitar store and test drive a bunch of different models. Each brand tends to have its own feel, so one person’s ideal guitar is another’s nightmare. Since you’re a beginner, you’ll probably do better with a guitar that has a thin neck and low action (strings close to the fretboard). Those things make it much easier and more comfortable to move smoothly between chords.

Ibanez makes fantastic guitars that are built like rocks, sound great and are often nicer than guitars costing twice as much. They’re also known for having really thin necks and low action, which makes them very comfortable for most guitarists to play. There’s a model called Sage that sells for less than $200 in the US, but it’s one of the nicest guitars I’ve ever played. The sound is incredible — rich and full. And it plays nicer than most $1,000 guitars I’ve used. It has a solid spruce top, as well, which means its sound will actually improve as it ages. Here’s a link:

And here’s a link to a US store where you can read the reviews of the Sage guitar to see that I’m not exaggerating:

If you handle a bunch of guitars before buying one, you’ll find that some feel more comfortable and natural in your hands than others. Ibanez, Takamine (and Jasmine by Takamine) and Alvarez guitars tend to have fairly thin necks, for instance, which makes them very user-friendly. But guitars made by Epiphone and Gibson have really chunky necks that can make them challenging for beginners to play. Trust your instincts, since they’ll serve you better than anyone else’s opinion. Most guitarists are somewhat brand loyal, but that’s only because they’ve found the brands that work for them. My brother, who owns a recording studio, swears only Gibsons and Martins are worth owning. But I’ve got smallish hands and find both brands physically impossible to play. For me, Ibanez guitars are perfect.

Ultimately, the way you feel about your guitar is more important than the price or the name on the headstock. If you go with one that feels like it belongs in your hands, you’ll be more inclined to practice and the sooner you’ll become a great guitarist. Good luck!

whats the best learner acoustic guitar to buy?

Posted by admin on May 15th, 2010

i’m 16 an i want to start learning acoustic guitar and i want to know whats the best one to buy.. help!

There is no single "best" one, but there are several companies that do make excellent starter "paks". The best "value" on the market right now (in my opinion) is the Ibanez Starter Pak. It comes with a full size, steel string guitar that is of good quality, a gig bag, an electronic tuner, and a tool pouch, all for $100.
Other good brands that have very similar packages include Fender, Epiphone, and Yamaha. These are a bit higher in price, but not too much.
REMEMBER: DO NOT BUY from a big box store like wal-mart or target! The instruments that they carry are essentially toys and are of inferior quality. Always buy a musical instrument from a music store to insure that it is of the best quality available. While you are at the music store you can check about lessons. Lessons are the easiest and fastest way to learn how to play the guitar. Keep in mind that over 90% of all people who try to teach themselves end up quitting due to frustration and lack of direction. A good teacher can show you the proper way to play and help keep you motivated.

Bohemian Rhapsody – for solo guitar

Posted by admin on May 7th, 2010

This is what I learned from Edgar Cruz’s DVD. I just HAD to learn this piece after hearing Edgar perform it. The music/tab (included on the DVD) is transcribed precisely, but that only scratches the surface. The DVD covers tons of valuable information on technique, variations and alternate fingerings (many of which you see here). I’m not claiming to be a virtuoso – I’m just showing off Edgar’s work. The magic is in the arrangement.

Coldplay– Don’t Panic– Acoustic Guitar Lesson

Posted by admin on May 4th, 2010

So here is my second beginners lesson: This time I went with Coldplay’s Don’t Panic. Most of Coldplay’s songs are tough for beginners, but this one is manageable when you break it down.

Please rate and comment, so I can improve my lessons/playing…

here are the chords and lyrics:

Verse:
Am C Fmaj7 (x2)

Chorus:
Dm (x2) Am (x2) Dm (x2) Am G

Lyrics:
Bones, sinking like stones,
All that we fought for,
Homes, places we’ve grown,
All of us are done for.

And we live in a beautiful world,
Yeah we do, yeah we do,
We live in a beautiful world,

Bones, sinking like stones,
All that we fought for,
And homes, places we’ve grown,
All of us are done for.

And we live in a beautiful world,
Yeah we do, yeah we do,
We live in a beautiful world.

Here we go, here we go

And we live in a beautiful world,
Yeah we do, yeah we do,
We live in a beautiful world.

Oh, all that I know,
There’s nothing here to run from,
‘Cause everybody here’s got somebody to lean on.

Would like to buy an acoustic guitar and budget is 100 pounds?

Posted by admin on April 27th, 2010

I am a beginner and looking to buy an acoustic guitar with the budget of 100 pounds. What all things should i consider while buying it and how fast i can learn playing it ?? I do not wana join any classes just to learn it from online material. Any suggestions about every thing??

looking forward

Make sure the neck isn’t twisted slightly otherwise it won’t play true. Look at eye level along the flat guitar body to make sure the neck with all the frets is true and flat with the body.
Guitar is a difficult instrument and nobody ever stops learning. Three chords however will get you through most popular songs while you come to understand it.
learn to read music even if its just the notes of the song.
