What are the main differences between a good quality cheap electric guitar and an expensive one?

Brand, woodwork and better quality strings.
The more expensive guitar really feels good in your hand. The texture of the guitar and the frets are closer to the strings. The hook that holds the string are also made with better materials unlike the cheap ones which will break if you are not careful.
Whats best is that expensive guitars are hand made by professionals and quality is always kept in check unlike the cheap ones which are machine made and quality isn’t that of a concern. Its like, if it looks like a guitar, it passes the quality check.

well consider this having a fender and just an ordinary electric guitar..sure..quality has its difference

You have to decide this for your self.
A good guitar will ‘fret true’, stay in tune, feel comfortable, sound the way you want.
If you want to pay for gold plating, thats up to you!
A guitar is only as good as its player!

In my experience the really cheap ones have a thin, weedy sound and struggle to stay in tune, however if you’re just starting out and deciding what to buy there’s no point paying a fortune until you are sure you want to keep at it.

The types of wood used to build the musical instrument, the craftsmanship and design of the craftsman building the instrument and the tone that the instrument produces when completed.
The quality of the sound is the most important factor in building a guitar, ie, Gibson compared to Martin, whether its a 6 string or a 12 string model.
As a child I learned to play Flamenco Music on a 12 string Martin Acoustic Guitar, using five finger picks.

The golden rule with everything is "you get what you pay for", and guitars are no different. Cheap guitars (under 400 aus) may look the part, but are made of inferior materials and workmanship. They go out of tune easily, sound worse(even electrics) and just dont feel as good to play. For example, play a fender strat made in korea (or a squier), and then play an american made one. Its like a porsche and a vw with a body kit. More money equals better wood, better steel parts, and more accurate dimensions. A better guitar will last longer and even increase in value as it ages, if you buy the right one. Of course, if you cant play well anyway, save your money till you can.

The really expensive ones are hand crafted by experts rather than done on a production line. The materials used are superior woods and metals which give more sustain and better tonal qualities.

A guitar for £50 will be sh*t! Good starting price in UK is £200-£300, for that you’ll get something competently made, but not using great woods or components. That’s where the money comes in, as any woodworker will tell you, good quality hardwoods, as used in guitar manufacture are expensive. Also you’ll get better pickups, tuners fretwork etc, when you get to the £600-£1000 range. Beyond that, you’re into hand made instruments, which a skilled luthier has created using years of experience.
Also consider that guitars are actually quite cheap as musical instruments go. A really good guitar will cost £1000, a good flute is £3000, a violin similar, & a halfway decent grand piano is over £10,000! Not bad for the lifetime’s fun, and possibly employment you’ll get from a Fender, Gibson, PRS etc.
