I would recommend 30-50 watts for a small room/garage. I have a 30watt amp that goes up to volume 10 but I've never even went past 4 while playing in my room.
References :
You didn't say what kind of music you want to play or what your budget is...both kind of important items.

For what you describe, anything over 20 watts is like using a cannon to kill a fly!

Guitar Player magazine recently reviewed several low power amps (under 20 watts or so). Search on guitarplayer.com for the write ups. That will give you a good starting point.

The Epiphone Valve Jr. series are a great. You can get a 5 watt combo for around $160. These amps are just fun. Super simple (just a volume control...like the old Fender tweed champs). Plug in and play. I keep a couple around for the studio and jamming with friends,

If you're really into effects, the look at the Line 6 Spider series. You can get into thoses for around $100.

Greetings from Austin, TX

Get a Fender Frontmans 5G. It's one of he best small amps out. It doesn't have good distortion, but it works for most songs.
References :
Play electric guitar.

You can find a number of small wattage amps, made by most every company, that would work great for playing in your room or in a garage. A 15 to 30 watt amp will fill your needs nicely, and they're relatively inexpensive. When you get to the 50 to 100 watt amps, they can be pricey. I have a 30 watt Marshall that I use for practice or playing at home. It has a clean channel and an overdrive channel, where I can get a hint of distortion, or, if I turn every thing to 10, I get a lot of distortion. I also have a Peavey 15 watt amp that will do the same, but the Marshall has a better sound.
References :
experience

yea 50 or 70
gives a good sound and you can change the volume

id say get a marshall or a vox amp
as they have the best sound and you can get some quality effects and distortion on them
References :
if u want to play in a band i would recommend over 100 watt but if ur just playing by urself u could use a 50 watt amp which is cheaper. Mine is 50 watt and can be quite loud and is good for distortion.
but its up to u
