Try http://www.musiciansfriend.com. Unless you live in Canada, like me, because then you’ll have to pay an arm and a leg for shipping. I’d go for the Ibanez. But if you want a really good guitar, you’ll have to pay $300+. But if you’re going more for the sentimental value, you could buy one for under $200 and then get it customized. You know, maybe his name printed on it, custom paint job, etc. But if all else fails, let this encourage you: If my girlfriend got me a new guitar, I’d be absolutely thrilled, even if it wasn’t the best.

I suggest that you stay away from ebay, as you are stuck with what ever you get in the mail…
you can check out craigslist as it would be local for your search.
You should also figure out if he wants an electric, an acoustic or acoustic/electric.
For my latest guitar, I went to my local music store, and found a beautiful Ovation for 235.00 with the hard case and the original brochure, an extra benefit is that you build a relationship with the local shop.
Look in your local bigger city to find a guitar repair shop, they may have a good deal just laying around.
I know several shops around me that are really cool.

$200 is really your entry level, but you will be looking at used, but as in the case of my Ovation, it really doesn’t matter, it could have been brand new for the condition that it is in.

I’m afraid you’re stuck. You know nothing about guitars; if you were an expert and willing to spend months shopping you could maybe find something for under $200. But since you don’t know enough, if you try the really cheap resources (pawn shops, classifieds, thrift stores) then you could wind up with a guitar that needs hundreds of dollars in repair–not the kind of gift you hope to give.

In your situation, you really need to find something with a warranty–that would mean going to a music store that offers second-hand guitars. I once bought a nice Ovation thin-body electric acoustic for $300 (tax brought it up to $325) from such a store, with warranty, and a generic case that I replaced later with an Ovation airline case from ebay.

Now, you might find a super deal on ebay–how soon is his birthday? But again, GET WARRANTY! If you can’t get a warranty, think about buying him something else he’d like and save up a couple hundred more and do the guitar for Christmas.

And while I would normally agree that he should try out the guitar before you buy it, Ovations are an exception–they’re absolute machines and their manufacturing makes them all quite similar in touch and sound, so since he likes them (I share his taste) then I’d say Ovation is what you should focus on.

Look, you should really take your boyfriend to a music store so he can try out the guitar first…if you have no idea, you shouldn’t buy one online.

There are entry-level electric guitar kits (with a small amp and cables) at Target around Christmas time and they’re less than $200 usually, but seriously, he should really try it out somewhere. After that, you can look online and see if you can get it cheaper.

But it will be very hard to find a GOOD guitar under $200 dollars sooo….. good luck. You should try at least $600….. if you want a good guitar that says "I love you" when he sees it.

edit…I just re-read… You’re looking for and acoustic electric guitar. A Gretsch hollowbody would be good, but they are a little pricey – you could find a good deal by checking e-bay, craigslist etc.

If you have one near you, Music Go Round is great too!!
