What guitar amp should I get?

Posted by admin on July 23rd, 2010

I have been playing guitar for about six months and I think it is time to upgrade from my little 10 watt amp that came with the guitar. I don’t know if I should go with the Peavey Vyper 30, Vox vt30, or the Orange Crush Pix 35. I play everything from classic rock to metal. What would be best?
If another amp is better then the ones I put, feel free to tell me.

The amps you’ve chosen are nice but they’re still in the "practice amp" category. They almost certainly have more features and effects than your 10 watt amp and are excellent amps to have around the house. The thing I would consider is that soon, you’ll probably want to play with other folks, and 30 watts just isn’t going to compete with bass and drums. If you can afford to keep buying amps as you grow into them, get any one of these.

If it was my choice, I’d spend a little more now and get an amp that I wouldn’t outgrow as fast. The Roland Cube 80x or the Vox VT50 would be near the top of my list. While they aren’t Marshall stacks, they’re big enough to cut through the mix….I have friends who use them for small gigs.

Where to buy an acoustic guitar strings?

Posted by admin on July 20th, 2010

Hi, I’m a first time buyer of an acoustic guitar strings. Is it better to buy from an online or where? And also I don’t know how to choose an acoustic guitar string. Is NYLON better so I won’t hurt my fingers?

Amazon is a good place to buy an acoustic guitar strings. I recommend Elixir brand. http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fb%3Fie%3DUTF8%26node%3D11967851&tag=digitsy-marina-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

What kind of acoustic guitar should i buy?

Posted by admin on July 20th, 2010

I’m 17. I’ve been playing my mom’s classical guitar for about a year now but I want to get my own acoustic. I’m really into jack johnson and similar artists. I can probably spend around 500 dollars. I went to my local guitar center and found a 350 dollar Seagull s6 that i loved. I also saw a martin dx1 there for 500 that was nice. Are either of these good choices for a first guitar? which one is better?

Either one will serve well if set up right. I assume you tried the guitars with relatively new strings on and well set up for playing.
I’ve heard reports of some finish problems and other things like rough fret ends on the low-end Martins, but this was a few years ago and one hopes they’ve cleaned up their act. I’ve always heard good things about Seagulls. Don’t know how big you are or if you want a body bigger than a classical, but I’ve tried some very impressive Korean-made dreadnaught body guitars. Look at Blueridge and Breedlove. These are mostly for flatpicking. If you’re used to a classical or think you might want to do more fingerpicking I’d look for one with a nut width of at least 1 3/4". That will be a big change from 52 mm or so for the classical, but that’s how they’re making them. Consider used, esp. if you know someone who knows guitars and can shop with you.

Good luck!

Steve

What headphones work best with a guitar amp?

Posted by admin on July 18th, 2010

i am trying to buy headphones that serve a main purpose to be plugged into an amp. i tried a 1/4 adapter with regular headphones (like those on mp3s) and the sound is horrible and low. does anyone have any recommendations? nothing over 40 or 50$ at the most

also, ive heard of the Vox amPlug guitar amp and i was wondering if (unlike with amps) any headphones work fine with it, or would i still need headphones with better quality than regular mp3-like ones?

Even with high-quality headphones, it’s always going to sound a little weird when you plug them into an amp.

A good pair of headphones comes in handy though. On a $50 budget I’d recommend the AKG K77’s. They’ll serve you well for recording, monitoring, practicing, etc.
